Phytomedicine. It may be a new concept
for some. It is the use of plants to address
human illness. It is been around most of
humanity’s existence, but today we’re quite accustomed
to pharmacological medicine. Looking to phytomedicine may benefit many of us, particularly post-menopausal women and others who have osteoporosis. Minster Chiropractic Center shares some recent research
about such plant-based treatments including ginger along with others like turmeric for Minster osteoporosis
treatment and side benefits of enhanced bone health and bone
OSTEOPOROSIS AND POST-MENOPAUSAL WOMEN: BONE FRACTURES, BMD
Women are very aware of osteoporosis. With DEXA
scans and concerns for fracture risk in the news, Minster women are reminded to take care of their bones.
Osteoporosis is best explained as an imbalance between bone
formation and bone resorption; both are controlled
by nitric oxide. When women get to menopause, estrogen levels
decrease which increases their fracture risk. In a new study,
women were treated with a nutraceutical containing Paullinia
cupana, Muira puama, ginger, and L-citrulline, said to enhance
fracture healing in rat studies. Nitric oxide was increased
along with other biomarkers like cGMP and calcium deposition. Bone mineral
density rose as bone resorption was slowed and
calcium deposition was improved. (1) Minster Chiropractic Center sees
these as beneficial results
for Minster osteoporosis management with chiropractic.
GINGER AND TURMERIC FOR OSTEOPOROTIC BONE HEALTH
Minster chiropractic treatment plans at
Minster Chiropractic Center are based on well-done research studies and experience. Minster Chiropractic Center
appreciates this well-designed prospective triple-blind randomized
controlled trial. Now, that’s a study!
Its aim is to gauge the effect of ginger and
turmeric on quality of life, body composition, bone mineral density (BMD) and
osteoporosis biomarkers in osteoporotic post-menopausal women. Since ginger and turmeric are relatively
inexpensive, this study’s results could surely impact the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. (2) Minster
nutritional options for osteoporosis keep growing!
FLL AND CURCUMIN (TURMERIC) FOR BONE PRESERVATION AND
Fructus Ligustri Lucidi (FLL) is an olive family plant used
for its antioxidant and anti-aging properties to treat osteoporosis for more
than 1000 years. It’s been around a long time!
Its bone-preserving properties may stem from the effect
FLL seems to have on the microecology of the intestine. Intestinal
changes – changes to the gut’s microecology – come with aging, and FLL appears
to influence that. As an extra
effect, cognitive function got better. (3) Further,
using both curcumin and Fructus Ligustri Lucidi enhanced bone
regeneration, positioning it as a hopeful alternative
herbal way to treat and prevent osteoporosis. (4)
