Neck Pain Relief That Starts Beyond Your Neck
If you've lived with neck pain for months, you've probably tried stretching it, rubbing it, and resting it. But here's a point that may come as a surprise: some of the most helpful exercises for a sore neck target its surrounding regions instead. Your neck works as part of a partnership that includes your jaw above and your upper back below, and two new studies published in 2026 show why that connection matters.
DON'T FORGET YOUR JAW
Researchers studied 62 adults who had dealt with neck pain for more than three months. (1) All participants performed neck stabilization exercises for six weeks, and half also did Rocabado exercises, a brief series of low-intensity movements for the jaw, tongue, and head posture. Both groups got better. The group that added jaw exercises, though, showed bigger gains in how much pressure their neck could withstand before it felt painful, in their ability to sense their head position, and in their balance. Since the jaw and neck share muscles and nerve pathways, it makes sense that caring for one can support the other.
YOUR UPPER BACK HELPS OUT
A related study of 54 adults added thoracic (mid- and upper-back) mobility exercises to regular neck exercises. (2) The additional exercise didn't ease pain more than neck exercises alone, but it did produce better posture, spinal mobility, neck-related function, and use of the arms and shoulders. A tight upper back may leave your neck working overtime, so freeing up it might help everything above work more smoothly.
WHY THIS MATTERS TO YOU
These were small, brief studies, and in both, the extra exercises were layered onto neck exercises rather than replacing them. Even so, they're a good reminder that the root of your symptoms and the road to relief aren't always in the same spot.
